Dear Families,

Where has the time gone?  It doesn’t seem possible that Christmas is just around the corner.  I hope you are more ready than I am!  Many people have asked about our Christmas party.  Hopefully all questions will be answered in this newsletter, if not let us knowJ.

Our party will be Wednesday, December 21st after the last recess, about 2:15.

During the party the children will be opening their stockings and having their party foods.

Please send in your child’s stocking and treats to put in the stockings by next Monday.  Please let us know if you cannot do this, we do not want to leave anyone out and will make sure that each child gets to participate.  It helps if we know ahead of time! Thank you!

Mrs. Helvie and I will be supplying cookies, frosting and sprinkles for each child to decorate their own cookie for the party.  We also have enough juices boxes for the party.

Since there will be lots of sugary treats in the stockings we are only asking for the following food and paper products:

*cut up fruit

*carrots

*non sugary snack

*plates

*napkins

If you can provide any of these items let us know and we will confirm whether we need you to bring it or not.  Often we get several people signing up for the same item.

Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the Christmas Season!

Mrs. Alexander and Mrs. Helvie

Dear Families,

We have a special way to exchange gifts together for Christmas!   We will be filling stockings!  We will all bring our own stocking from home, and your child will have an opportunity to fill everyone else’s stocking with a little surprise.  The children will be able to look in their stocking and see all the surprises from their friends at our Christmas party on Wednesday, Dec. 21st.  They will bring their stockings home that day.  The children  love   doing this!

Here’s what we need you to do:

1.      Send in your child’s stocking with their name on it by Friday, December 16th.

2.    Find 17 surprises for your child to put in all the children’s stockings.  Consider sending an extra in case we get a new student.

a.     Keep all the items the same and please do not put names on them.

b.     Be creative—it can be small treats, pencils, dollar store toys, etc.

c.     Remember 17 people will be putting things in the stockings, so think small!

3.    Send the surprises in with your child on December 16th or 19th.

4.    If you are unable to send a stocking or little surprises please send a note, no one will be left out!

Happy Shopping,

Mrs. Alexander

Dear Families,

I can’t believe that we have just finished our 4th week of school, where has the time gone?  The kids have settled in pretty well and we are working hard on our first grade objectives.

We have just finished our first social studies unit on citizenship.  For Constitution Day our classes learned about our country’s constitution and wrote our own classroom rules.  We also learned about several of our country’s symbols and what they stand for.

Reading centers and writing workshop are in full swing.  The children are developing stamina in both and are doing a great job.

In writing we are focusing on writing personal narratives.  If you do something that is fun or interesting with your child, remind them that they could write about it at school.  Writers are always looking for ideas!

We are starting to run low on snacks.  Remember we do not have a snack calendar or special day for you to send in a snack.  We just ask that families donate a bag of pretzels, cheese crackers, animal crackers, etc from time to time.  The kids appreciate everything!

We have already had our first cold bug hit the rooms so extra Kleenex, hand sanitizer or wipes can be sent in anytime.

Attached you will find a book order with information on how you can order books for your children.  We have attached two order forms for you to choose from.  Scholastic offers much better prices than you will be able to find in most book stores.  Please return all orders by next Friday, October 7tth.

School pictures will be taken next Thursday, October 6th.

Check out our website for our science inquiry pictures.  In case you have forgotten our website address is:  www.Rooms13and15.weebly.com

Have a great weekend!

Dear Families,

Homework will almost always go home on Monday and will be due the following Monday. Make sure that your child’s name is on the returned homework.

These Home Links are designed to review concepts taught in school.  The Family Letter portion gives more information about how the math is taught.  It also contains all the answers to the math problems in the Home Links for the Unit 1.  Save the Family Letter because next week we will be sending the rest of the Unit 1 pages.

Along with this math homework, please be sure and read with your child at least 15 minutes a night.  The more your child reads and is read to the better of a reader she/he will become!

                        Sincerely,

                        Mrs. Alexander

                                                                                                                      August 22, 2011

Dear Families,

Welcome back to AuSable Primary.  Our Open House is Tuesday, August 30th from 4:30 – 5:30.  We are excited to be your child’s first grade teachers and getting to know all of you this year.  We team teach in adjoining rooms.  We are looking forward to using this approach to make your child’s first grade experience fun and challenging.

First grade is a big step for children.  Your child’s attendance is very important.  The learning that happens in the classroom is not something that can be sent home.  We start promptly when the bell rings so please try to be on time.  Attendance and punctuality are important lifelong habits.  Your child will have a better year if you make sure he/she is present at school, well rested and has had a healthy breakfast each day.

If your child will ride the bus regularly to school, have them ride the first day of school.   This is when there is the most help for students.  Feel free to meet them here and walk to class together.

If you walk your child to the classroom, try to leave as soon as possible even if your child is feeling a bit sad.  The transition is harder the longer you stay in the classroom.  After the first few days we encourage you to let your child walk down to the classroom alone and become independent.  We promise to take good care of all your children as if they were our own.

Snack

Please encourage your child to eat a hardy breakfast and finish their lunch.  We will have a small snack in the afternoon.  Please send a large bag of animal crackers or pretzels to be stored in the classroom and shared at snack time. We do celebrate birthdays but please keep the snacks simple.  You do not have to provide birthday treats for both classrooms, but if you would like to please let us know.

School Supplies             First graders need a backpack to bring to school everyday.  If possible also send a small pencil box.  Items for the pencil box include pencils, a small pencil sharpener, crayons, glue sticks and an eraser.  No markers please.  Please put your child’s name on his/her belongings.   Our classrooms also need tissues, hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes.

Communicator Folder             To help students stay organized and parents on top of what is going on at school, we at AuSable Primary use a purple Communicator folder that will go back and forth from home to school everyday.  Check the folder nightly for papers and messages from school.  If you are sending lunch money with your child it can also be placed in this folder.  Please put your child’s name and the words ‘lunch money’ on an envelope containing the lunch money.  If this folder is lost, just have your child bring a different folder to school each day.

School Rules             Our school rules are simple and designed to help children get along with each other.  They are: 1. Be safe. 2.  Be respectful.  3.  Be responsible.

We use a classroom discipline system that is designed to help students to be aware of and control their own behavior.  We have a small chart with a pocket for each child.  The pockets hold 5 colored cards that stand for levels of behavior.  Green means rules are being followed.  Yellow is a warning and a chance to correct the behavior.  Red means a second problem has happened and the child misses 5-10 minutes of recess.  Blue is a third problem and the child misses the whole recess.  If the child gets to Orange, parents will be called.  If any serious problems arise, the card goes immediately to Orange.  Every day the pockets will start at green.

Homework

Homework consists of the math Home Links that go along with our math program.  The Home Links will usually be sent home on Monday.  Please return the following Monday.   By mid October students will be bringing home a baggie with 2 little books to read at home.  Books should be read several times for practice.  The books will come home on Mondays and should be returned by the following Monday.  Students will also be bringing home phonics pages that go along with our phonics program.  These pages have homework on the back of the page for the children to do at home.  Please do these with your child, but they do not need to be returned to school.

There are two main goals for homework.  The first is to give the child practice in skills learned or help in areas of difficulty.  The second is to give the parents the opportunity to see what their child is able to do and is learning in school.

The children work very hard all day long.  Today’s first graders are expected to do much more than even 5 years ago.  With that in mind we will keep homework assignments to a minimum.  Have your child get outside and play when they get home and enjoy some family time.  We encourage you to set aside at least 15 minutes each night to read with your child.

Newsletters             We try to send a newsletter home at least once a month.  These will be placed in the Communicator folder and on our classroom website, www. rooms13and15.weebly.com .

After School Changes             If your child is going home in a way that is different than usual we will need a note in writing from you, dated and signed.  Unless it is an emergency please don’t call the office at the end of the day with changes.  Also please send a note if your child has a variable schedule.  This is for your child’s safety.

Handbook             Handbooks will be sent home on the first day of school.  There are 2 purple pages in the back of the handbook that should be filled out and returned:  a Student and Parental/Guardian Consent form with rules for using the internet at school, an Emergency form (front and back) which contains an Early Dismissal Plan, Permission to Participate in Field Trips, and a Media Photo Release.   Please return these forms to me as soon as possible.

Open House             This year the Open House for AuSable Primary will be the week before school starts.  The date is Tuesday, August 30th  from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.  We look forward to meeting you!

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher.  The first day of school will not be a good timeJ!  You can write a note in the Communicator Folder, e-mail us at pkalexande@casdk12.net or mhelvie@casdk12.net or call the school (344-3654) and leave a message.  We will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter for more information check our classroom website, www. rooms13and15.weebly.com .  We are looking forward to meeting you at Open House.

Sincerely,

Pamela K. Alexander

Mary Jane Helvie
